The Consolation of the Sea
acrylic and coloured pencil on D'Arches 155 hot
press watercolour paper, 16x20 inches.
This painting is available for purchase at the
Collector's Gallery, Lexington, KY
This painting was inspired also by sculptural
objects seen at the Allegheny Cemetery in
Pittsburgh. A sarcophagus bore on each corner a
small statue such as the one painted here. As I
looked at them, I could not help thinking they
possessed a monumental quality greater than their
actual size. So I painted the figure as though she
were as large as something that might have been
seen on the Parthenon.
