This painting was inspired also by sculptural objects seen at the Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh. A sarcophagus bore on each corner a small statue such as the one painted here. As I looked at them, I could not help thinking they possessed a monumental quality greater than their actual size. So I painted the figure as though she were as large as something that might have been seen on the Parthenon.
